Consumers Need Compelling Reason to Switch TV Service to Telcos

In-Stat: As telecom companies enter the market for TV services, they face a somewhat skeptical customer base. Only 5% of satellite or cable TV subscribers that responded to an In-Stat consumer survey said they would definitely switch to a telco TV provider. Another 13% said they would probably switch, but 52% were undecided. Many consumer decisions to switch to a telco TV provider will hinge on the breadth of services and the cost savings offered.

  • Respondents were most interested in time shifted TV, caller ID on TV and interactive information.

  • Video surveillance and video telephony, where 25% are willing to pay extra, in addition to time shifted TV were the services respondents were most willing to pay for.

  • No provider, cable or telco, stood out as best suited to deliver add-on services; preferences for a provider depend on the individual respondent’s experience with each type of provider.
